Marijuana Substances Promise As Psychotic Medicines

Marijuana Substances Promise As Psychotic Medicines

Clinical testing of a substance contained in marijuana, called cannabidiol or CBD, shows promising results as a new treatment for treating psychosis, the Reuters news agency reported. Psychosis is a psychiatric disorder characterized by anxiety, paranoia, and hallucinations. In a study involving 88 people with psychosis, one scientist found, patients treated with CBD had lower symptoms of psychosis than those who received placebo treatment. They are also more likely to be judged “progress” by their psychiatrists, according to the results of the study. In addition, there are also improvements in function and cognitive performance. But the second ingredient, CBD, has the opposite effect with THC. This makes scientists think, maybe one time it will be useful to treat mental health. Scientists from King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Neuroscience, conducted a full spectrum cbd trial in patients with psychosis and published their findings in the American Journal of Psychiatry.

In the trial, 88 patients received a CBD or placebo for six weeks, along with antipsychotic drugs. Before and after the trial, scientists assessed the symptoms, performance and cognitive functions of the patient. And then, each patient’s psychiatrist assessed their overall condition. The results of the study indicate CBD might be effective in treating psychosis. Patients who received CBD treatment showed reduced symptoms and the psychiatrist who treated them assessed their overall condition improved. Although it is still unclear how the CBD works, it acts on antipsychotic treatments in different ways, and this can represent a new type of treatment. The low dose of THC given was chosen so that there was no intoxicating effect on mice. Marijuana products have been allowed as drugs in the United States and other countries, for example as a pain reliever. As a close step, researchers want to attend clinical examinations to examine whether THC also reverses the aging process in the brain in humans and can improve cognitive abilities.
